Society History

Plain Township organized officially in 1809. This was only six years after Ohio became a state in 1803.  A stream of pioneer families bought land in the newly opened for settlement land.  Who these families were, where they lived, and what they did began to be recorded.  These permanent records and writings became the history of Plain Township.  The written history was not kept by one group of people or organization but ended up with families, churches, libraries and government agencies.

In 2005 Plain Township Trustees realized that something needed to be done to organize and preserve the information.  They advertised for people from the Plain Township community who would be interested in starting an organization to gather and manage these historical collections   A small group who were interested replied and organized into the Plain Township Historical Society.

The group began to meet to form the Society and created the first Board of Trustees.  The officers were President Tom Pieper, Vice-President Linda Dessauer, Secretary Judy Pocock, and Treasurer Ruby Bair.  The first meeting was held in February 2005 at the Plain Township Hall.   Community interest grew and sustained the new organization which has steadily grown in membership and information.
